When it comes to Halloween, I like to make a fuss! I’ve always decorated but in 2015, I started going large in my suburban semi at number 71 (oneandseventy… get it?) It started with a small table, moved onto a mantel, and has since grown into a fully-decorated, walk-through ‘Haunted Mansion’ experience.

The Witch at OneandSeventy was born of a successful blog that focussed on seasonal decorating, with particular emphasis on Halloween. Since throwing open my doors to the local Trick or Treaters, The Witch at OneandSeventy’s Halloween Home has become an annual tradition,

With over 300 visitors at its peak, I’ve had multiple sponsorships from Tesco and my free Halloween Open Nights have raised hundreds for local charities.

In 2020, when Covid put paid to visitors, it didn’t deter me. I simply decorated my home so it could be viewed through the window! That year, my Halloween Home was featured in a full page article in The Sun newspaper and I appeared on Channel 5’s Jeremy Vine Show and BBC Radio 5 Live talking about my Halloween decorating journey.

Oh, how rich would I be if I had a penny for every time I’ve heard that!

Halloween has its roots in the ancient pagan festival of Samhain – or Sow-en as it’s pronounced, which started right here in the British Isles. And we Brits are all for it! Halloween is now the third largest UK seasonal celebration behind Christmas and Easter.

Halloween is BIG business!

I’m not the only one who goes all out. We Brits are rapidly favouring Halloween over almost every other seasonal celebration. In the UK, Halloween spending increased by 342% in the last decade, from £230 million in 2013, to over £1 billion in 2023.
